Encrypt your data and have peace of mind

In the laptop computers we use at Condor DataVault we take the protection of data very seriously. When travelling, usually we carry laptops or removable storage devices which contain confidential data. We have found that most people carry their laptops all the time just for the single fear of having their data stolen, which is a very simple way to ruin a vacation.

Keep in mind that less than 30% of PC users backup their data, and the number is even lower with laptop users. With laptop theft being one of the most damaging forms of data loss, you need to be aware of the sensitivity of your data and how to protect it.

We use encryption to protect all our sensitive information. Encryption makes impossible for anyone to access our files in the event that our laptops or removable storage devices are misplaced or stolen. Having your files encrypted while on the move will save you a lot of pain if something happens. Just think of it as cheap insurance. Insurance of business data is basically a non-existent industry in North America. It is worth the risk?.

There are many encryption tools but our favorite one is TrueCrypt which creates a encrypted file in your computer, when this file is mounted you can put all your files as you are working on a network drive or removable device. A similar process can be done using your removable storage device. Before we shutdown our laptops we backup our data to an encrypted removable storage device (most of the time a USB flash drive) which we carry in a separate place. Once we return to the office, we proceed to update with our Local DataVault.

In each of our newsletters we always try to avoid going too deep into technical details. If you have questions about encryption talk to your IT Consultant or send us an email, always remember that we are always just one click away.

DataVault tips

Avoid using your DataVault equipment in a dusty area

Any dust blocking the air vents will cause your DataVault to operate above the normal operating temperature range, which over time will increase the risk of hardware failure.

Pay special attention to your Remote DataVault, most of the Remote DataVaults are located at homes which tend to have a more dusty environment.
