We use encryption to protect all our sensitive information. Encryption makes impossible for anyone to access our files in the event that our laptops or removable storage devices are misplaced or stolen. Having your files encrypted while on the move will save you a lot of pain if something happens. Just think of it as cheap insurance. Insurance of business data is basically a non-existent industry in North America. It is worth the risk?.
There are many encryption tools but our favorite one is TrueCrypt which creates a encrypted file in your computer, when this file is mounted you can put all your files as you are working on a network drive or removable device. A similar process can be done using your removable storage device. Before we shutdown our laptops we backup our data to an encrypted removable storage device (most of the time a USB flash drive) which we carry in a separate place. Once we return to the office, we proceed to update with our Local DataVault.
